Here a small description for each of the 13 wine appelations of the Beaujolais wine region:


Le Beaujolais

The Beaujolais is the most produced wine in the region (there are 10,300 hectares of vineyard used to produce Beaujolais wine), we can drink it all year long. It is better to drink it around 52 degrees Fahrenheit.

Le Beaujolais Nouveau

The 3rd Thursday of November, half of the production of Beaujolais wines is sold as Beaujolais Nouveau. These wines have a light red color, and flowered and fruity aromas.

Beaujolais Villages

38 towns of the region produce the Beaujolais villages, it's a quarter of the whole wine production. These wines taste mostly like fruit (blackcurrant and strwberries), their color is red.

Brouilly

The Brouilly is produce over 1,300 hectares of vineyard, located at the foot of the Brouilly hill, which is a famous hill in the Beaujolais, there is this little chapel on top of the hill that we can see all illuminated at night.This wine has a color close to ruby color and a fruity aroma of red fruits, prune or peach. It is better served around 54 degrees Fahrenheit, with red meat.

Chénas

The Chénas, is one of the rearest wines of the region, it is produced only over 280 hectares. These wines have a floral taste and a dark-red color. It is recommended to drink it around 57 degrees Fahrenheit, and with a meal made of strong cheeses and meat with sauce.

Chiroubles

The Chiroubles is produced on the highest vineyard of the Beaujolais (1312 feet high) where the soil is mostly granite. With their brightly red color and and their floral aromas (lily, violet, peony) and served around 53 degrees Fahrenheit, it goes very well with cold meat, poultry, white meat and hord d'oeuvres.

Côte de Brouilly

These wines are made from the vineyard which are on the Brouilly hill. They have a red-purple color and taste like fresh grapes and Iris. The Côte de Brouilly are better drunk old, around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and with cold meats.

Fleurie

"Fleurie" in French means "full of flowers", these wines as you can guess now have a floral taste (iris, violet, rose...), their color is red. The Fleurie are good to drink with a meal made of lamb, poultry or white meat.

Juliénas

The Juliénas is produced over 600 hectares, it can be drunk young or after having aged. It has a red-purple color and is better served at 55 degrees Fahrenheit with a coq-au-vin, game birds or poultry in sauce.

Morgon

The morgon is better after several years of aging. These wines have a dark-red color and fruit aromas (cherry, peach, abricot...). The Morgon is good, drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit, with rich meat dishes, and cheeses.

Moulin a vent

"Moulin a vent" in french means windmill, this name comes from a very old windmill located on a hill of the Romaneche-Thorins village, in the North-East of the region. These wines are better drunk when they are old, they have a dark-red color and spicy aromas. Served at 57 degrees Fahrenheit, it goes well with red meats, and strong cheeses.

Regnié

The Regnié is the youngest wine of the region, its production started in 1988. Their color is red and their taste is fruity (blackberries, rasberries, redcurrants). These wines are better drunk around 53 degrees Fahrenheit, with terrines, white meats and warm hord d'oeuvres.

Saint Amour

The Saint Amour is produced over 310 hetares in the North of the Beaujolais region. Its color is red and it tastes like kirsh cherry and reseda herb. The Saint Amour is good at 52 degrees Fahrenheit with cold meats and poultry.
